The Brumby Anti-Dumping Review

Joint Submission by the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU), the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) and The Australian Workers’ Union (AWU).

The AMWU, AWU and CFMEU commend the progress made by the Gillard Government in renovating Australia’s Anti-Dumping and Countervailing Regime. Recent amendments to the Customs Act and related regulations are reforming Australia’s anti-dumping and countervailing regime in response to numerous concerns outlined in submissions made to the Productivity Commission’s 2009 review of the anti-dumping and countervailing system.
The anti-dumping and countervailing system is a vital trade defence. It also aims to ensure that progress made in trade liberalisation is maintained (rather than undermined) by illegal offshore practices which either ignore or sanction dumping practices and which also allow domestic subsidies to undercut the competiveness of Australian producers.
