The bushfires that are ravaging Australia this summer will be remembered not just for the tragedy, but also for the bravery and selflessness shown by so many.
The firefighters, going in to the fire zones to protect homes and lives. The timber workers who used their equipment and skill, often at great personal risk, to allow the firefighters to do their jobs. The truck drivers and seafarers delivering supplies to fire affected communities. The millions of Australians who gave up time and money to help with the recovery.
We were not at all surprised to hear that so many of the people who stepped up were union members. After all – that’s what being union is about.
