Unjust Treatment of Denim 108 Workers: It's Time to Demand Fair Pay!

19 Sep 2023

Imagine this: It's payday, and you've just wrapped up your work, looking forward to a relaxing weekend ahead. But instead, you're hit with shocking news at a staff meeting. Your employer drops the bombshell – it's your last day at work, and the company is shutting its doors, ending its manufacturing in Australia.

That's the reality that unfolded for the hardworking employees at Denim 108. But the injustice doesn't stop there. The company left them high and dry, failing to pay their fortnightly wages, provide any notice, or pay the workers their redundancy payments and leave entitlements. To make matters worse, they had failed to make superannuation payments since late 2022.

The worst part? The company didn't even give these dedicated workers a timeline for when they would receive the money they were owed. And to add salt to the wound, Denim 108 didn't go into liquidation, making it impossible for the workers to claim their outstanding wages and entitlements from the Fair Entitlements Guarantee Scheme (FEGS).

These workers are now in dire straits, desperately searching for new jobs. Among them are single mothers with mortgages to pay and migrant workers with limited English skills. It's an unfair and heartbreaking situation that no one should have to endure.

What makes this situation even more outrageous is the history of these workers' dedication. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they risked their health to produce essential supplies like scrubs and masks for frontline responders, aged-care facilities, healthcare workers, and schools. Denim 108 even received a substantial government grant of $400,000 to expand its operations and produce critical isolation gowns.

Despite their unwavering commitment during the pandemic, Denim 108 chose to let them go without any notice or compassion. But the real betrayal lies in the company's refusal to pay the workers what they are rightfully owed, including their wages, redundancy packages, accrued leave, and other entitlements.
